Firstborn 02:19
When he came Lurching forward into frame, You were nothing but a name In my belly, kicking all night long. We were there On that morning, in the square, When the smell of him hit the air And the world split upon his song. My son, This is how we were undone— How Lizard Monster won. Then came fire Winding through the streets like wire, Killing off the shrieking choir, Who leapt flaming through their windowpanes. Men broke To see little children choke, Lurching forward through the smoke, Black blood spilling from their soundless veins. We fell And this world went to hell— My baby knows it well. Oh, you look like your father, Like your father, Like your father, Like your father's boy, Sweet joy! Now I stood, Clutched you tightly as I could— The only living hint of good— And I carried you away from there. How you thrashed! How you kicked and spun and splashed As the whole grey world smashed! I held you and I spoke my prayer. My child, You were so strong and so wild, I swear I almost smiled. When you came, We were far beyond the frame— Some dark cave without a name— Bats and rats and wild game— Our little blanket and our little flame. And you looked like your father, Like your father, Like your father, Like your father's boy, Sweet joy!

Lizard Monster Rips the city down. All the buildings burst. All the bridges drown. Watch the world break— Makes a mighty sound. See the bodies burst Upon the ground! Lizard Monster, Forty stories high, Snatches helicopters From a flaming sky. Lord, the boys cry! None shall survive— Lizard Monster Swallows them alive! Dies irae, dies illa! Scrape the world clean... See the Monster Belch an evil flame. Watch it blaze across The edges of the frame. See the lens boil— See the bitter stain— See the color Of all human pain! Don’t you dare blink. Don’t you look away. Don’t you even think To let them see you pray. Keep your eyes fixed. Fix them in the grey. Die and die And die and die all day! Dies irae, dies illa! Tell me what you’ve seen...

Fathoms 03:42
I remember The furious light and its falling. Like an ember It fell through the sky, with a squalling. How the hatchlings cried— How they died crawling. I can still Taste the dark, sour stink of the dying, Hear the millions Filling the skies with their crying, See them break in the mud— See the blood flying. Our tails thrash the earth. Our scales shine like diamonds. We claw the ruined earth for shelter, Bleed and swelter In the bloody Sunlight. Oh, what shame, To have run like a child from the slaughter— From the flame Glowing hungry, the air growing hotter— To have run like a fool To the cool water. So I sank Like a stone, all alone in the gloaming. And my flank Trailed traces of blood, black and foaming— How they wound through my scales, Countless trails, combing. Be still, and hold your breath One thousand years—one million— Be still, and stay your hands from shaking— Someday you will Wake beneath the Sunlight.

Shed 03:38
First, we bind the hands and feet. Next, we cut the clothes away. Bare the sacrificial meat, Ready for the passion play. Third, we rub the skin with salt, Give the lips a taste of wine. Let our voices fill the vault. Let our faces fill with brine. Let our meager tongues exalt He who makes the spirit shine. Here begins our holy endeavor! Sisters, we shall praise Him forever! Now we take the blade, and we Cut a circle ‘round the wrist. Now we pull the pale flesh free— Rip it from the stubborn fist. O, this is how we shed the skin, How we make the flesh anew— Purged of every mortal sin, Every mortal point of view. This is how we look within, Like the Monster wants us to. Here begins our holy endeavor! Brothers, we shall praise Him forever! Now, the screams of ecstasy. Now, the pounding of the drums. Now, the holy agony. Now, the body shakes and hums. Now, we set the spirit free. Now, our Lizard Master comes! Here begins our holy endeavor! Hatchlings, we shall praise Him forever! Brothers, we shall praise Him forever! Sisters, we shall praise Him forever!

Sixty million years I slumbered Deep under the sea, Dreaming dreams of smoke and thunder And a bright light shattering me, While my body twisted slowly In the soundless mud, Heavy with blood, Heavy with blood. When I woke, my eyes were older, And my bones frightfully cold. How I moaned as I unfolded, Moaning low—Lo and behold, Is it sunlight? Shards of sunlight In the deep dark sea, Beckoning me, Beckoning me? No living thing can stop me now— The sunlight breaks upon my brow, And rips me from this catacomb— My body barrels through the foam— O happy world, I’m coming home! There are strange and unfamiliar insects here— See them appear, Stinging sharp against my scales And buzzing ‘round my suffering ear. I can hardly take a step Without the crunch of meat, Horribly sweet, Under my feet. There is nothing here that I remember, No trace of my home! No more color in the earth or sea or sky, Nothing but chrome! No more friends! No loving faces! Not a single tree! Nothing to see, Nothing but me. Lord, don’t let me die alone, Old and weary as a stone, Ragged scales on heavy bones Braying soft and mournful tones Through this quiet catacomb, Insubstantial as seafoam— Or the memory of home.

Nobody said it would feel any better today. Nobody cared when I carried your body away, Out from the ash in the church where the cold corpses lay Tangled and mangled and grey—beginning to pray. Nobody said it would help if I whispered your name, Tracing the shape of the object your body became— One of a billion bodies what all look the same— None but our Master to blame. I have seen him clothed in fire, His body rising from the gyre Like some black angel Come to consecrate his pyre. Nobody spoke when I broke at the foot of your grave. None came to hold me, or told me to try to be brave. Nobody said you were anything worthy to save— One more pale broken slave. I have seen our Master’s hands— They shape his pyre—the gyre expands— No living creature understands His cruel commands. When he roars, the world shatters Where he stands.

Mad Science 03:53
Nine men, Lab coats and clipboards, Goggles and pens, Ten miles underground. Concrete walls, Cold cement floors, Doors leading nowhere— Soft human sounds Resound. Blueprints, Complex equations, Nine moving pens, One small bead of sweat. Soft nods, Handshakes and short laughs— We won’t forgive what We can’t forget. We’ll sweat— Sweat— We’re gonna save the world, And we’re gonna kill a monster! Nine men, Ten tons of steel, Twelve circuit boards, Five hundred meters of wire. Hammers, Drill bits, and sawblades— Lord, we shall forge our Lady in fire, In fire. See her blister with Sparks in the darkness, The white molten glow Of her skin. Inside, all her circuits Come roaring to life With a murderous Mechanical din. Let us begin— All hail the arrival Of Mecha Lizard Monster! Pale men, Shaking and slack-jawed, Stinking of sweat, Press their lips to her feet. Cold eyes, Wide smiling jaws, Chrome fingers to cradle The soft mortal meat. We bleat. No man Sees her departure, Climbing the miles To the surface to kill. No man Stirs from where he sleeps, Cold for his mistress, Perfectly still. None will.

Here she comes, Cantering over the plain, Silver-bodied and sleek, Sparkling under the rain. Her body shines Like a steel hurricane! See her shape, A perfect likeness of mine: Every curve in its place, Every angle and line. What monstrous bliss Just to see her design! Oh, my darling, you and I are the only Lovers left in the end— And I swear that you shall never be lonely, My pretty friend! Here we stand, The very last of our breed— Her blazing eyes upon mine, Burning with animal need. I clench my claws ‘Til the palms break and bleed. I need her Erupting into my skin, Her tail twining with mine, Her laughter sparkled with sin. I need her Roaring for me to begin! Oh, my darling, you are simply beguiling— I don’t dare look away! Oh, behold my features twist into smiling— I’ve come home today! Dance with me— Twirl and stride— Say you’ll be My steel bride... Here I come, Cantering over the plain, My arms wide for my bride, Joyous under the rain. She is a mountain, Imperious and vain! Oh, the trembling earth resounds before us— Oh, what frightful applause! Oh, what murderous mechanical chorus Drips from her jaws!

FINISH HIM! 04:32
Mecha Lizard Monster stands! Cold lightning crackles through The circuits in her hands! Nobody sees her speeding fist Before it lands And he drops— His eyeball pops! Bloodied Lizard Monster squeals! And blinded by his love, He breaks beneath her heels! She shatters every single Piece of him that feels, And she screams— Her body gleams! Lizard Monster bleeds away. She hovers ‘bove him, as if Daring him to pray. Hers is a beauty That the beast cannot betray, And his cries Corrupt the skies. Her steel fingers, black with blood, Separate her squealing Lover in the mud, Rip limb from tattered limb And beckon forth a flood From his veins— Oh, it rains upon the ruined world today, Cold and grey, Cold and grey. Oh, he reaches for her with his raw, Ragged claw Anyway. Oh, to see him trembling and starry-eyed For his bride, For his bride. Oh, to see the horrid tongue she rips From his lips, Thrown aside, Thrown aside. And now she grips him by the tail, And now she whirls him above her in the gale! And now she lets him fly— Oh, see the monster sail Through the sky! Oh, see him fly! And say goodbye, Say goodbye.

I Remember the old green world: Big ferns and flowers forever— The fragrance that filled up our lives. And I Remember what living was like Before the meteor strike— Now I am the last who survives. And I Am alone for the very last time, Older and colder and blind— Space is a fine place To bury a mind. I Remember the others like me. We ruled our forest forever, Roaring our bliss at the sky. I Have long kept the song in my head— The voices of millions dead. They are singing now, happy and high. And I Will never be empty again. Lord! how our voices ascend Into the dark place Where all monsters end. I try to hold tight To each delight Blazing inside: The old scent of pine— The world that was mine— And my old pride— And my cold bride. Goodbye. Goodbye. (I Have never felt so afr—)

Embers 04:39
Sometimes, when I am sleeping, My mama wakes me weeping, And hugs me hard enough to mark. I turn her toward the fire. I stack the branches higher. I slap away each falling spark. My mama slowly lays her Head upon my shoulder. She says I’ll look just like my Daddy when I’m older, Says Daddy would have loved me, Says Daddy’s thinking of me, Out somewhere waiting in the dark. Sometimes at night, I travel Barefoot on bloody gravel, Beside the river, through the glade, ‘Til I can see the city— Star-bright and almost pretty— That Mecha Lizard Monster made. Her naked slaves parade in Chains and shriek with hunger. They weep for what the world was Like when they were younger, Before they bowed before her To worship and adore her, When they were young and unafraid. My mama calls me ‘darling,’ Calls me her precious starling, Tells me I am the world entire. I braid her hair with flowers. I sing her name for hours. I prod the embers into fire. My mama holds me, and I Nuzzle in her shoulder. I’m gonna look just like my Daddy when I’m older...

Roll Credits 04:01
Takashi lurches into frame, Sweating through his rubber suit, Resolute. He rips the cardboard city down, The camera closing on his eyes— His cheap disguise. We are beginning to make monsters— We are beginning to see Something we shall weep for When it dies. Tinfoil, cardboard, chromium— We cover Hatsu head to toe. We make her glow. She stands, a proud automaton, And strains to flex her foil paws, Her shining claws. She grunts and giggles at the whimsy— Oh, but to see her strut Across the stage With lightning in her jaws! Lord, we shall forge from pretty trash Creatures wild and brash, Mugging for the camera, Waiting for the tungsten flash. We shall tremble at the sight, Dizzy from the light, When the fireworks arrive— When our creatures come alive. We whirl tiny aeroplanes On fishing hooks and silver strings— The wire sings. Our monsters tumble through the frame, Towering high above the flames— We roar their names. We turn the camera towards the carnage— And pray the camera may Discover rapture In the thousand frames. Lord, we are more than simple trash, More than mortal ash! See what wonders we have brought Before the tungsten flash! Make them tremble at the sight When the walls ignite— Let no human soul survive When our children come alive!

about

Thrill to the tale of Lizard Monster—ashore after a sixty-million-year undersea exile—grappling with a new, unfriendly world. His old friends are dead. He’s besieged by tiny people with tiny guns. Worst of all, he’s smitten with a homicidal robot. Will our hero persevere? Can he salvage joy from what’s left of his monochrome, badly-dubbed B-movie existence? Should Pale People really have spent a full year recording a goddamned kaiju rock opera? Listen, friends, and see.
